A fire in a Prague flat has revealed thousands of historical artefacts. The artefacts, mostly metal, include bronze arrow tips, buckles, and pieces of weapons and armour. Unfortunately, the collection was gathered by amateur metal hunters (mostly illegally), and the pieces have not been labelled according to where they were found, making the work of identifying the pieces that much harder for archaeologists.
The flat belong to a man who died in the fire in 2005. The man had no relatives, so the state inherited the remains of the flat and the collection. Archaeologists have now begun going through the collection, but they have their work cut out for them, both by the collection's extensive size (larger than the collections of some Czech museums), and by the disorganized state the items are in. It may be years before we see if any other the items possess identifiable historical significance. |
